Mind Over Media

Today’s topic of discussion is social media. Have you ever stopped to realize how large of a hold Instagram or Facebook has on you? We spend all, or most, of our time looking at the lives of others instead of living our own. Sometimes even living vicariously through their posts. Personally it helps me fall asleep at times, and it’s the first thing I check in the mornings to help me wake up. What substance does it really have, how does it benefit us? It really doesn’t. We use it to judge others, and let’s face it, stalk people from time to time. Yes stalk….because looking at every post of one particular person to judge who they are, or what they might be in to is stalking. Our heads are so buried in our devices that we see and take pictures of our experiences, but do we really stop to experience the moment? Do we really soak in all that surrounds us in that fleeting moment significant enough to post about? It is said by many a psychologist that social media creates narcissists. Posting something about yourself or your interests is like having your own 15 minutes of fame, and it’s addictive. We’ve all seen the crazy pictures parents force the children to take, instilling an ever further root of narcissism and dependance on social platforms for interaction. Granted I’m not against it. There are some amazing benefits to having a FB or Instagram account. However, if you stop and think……how much of your mind is invested in it?
