Mind Over Media
Today’s topic of discussion is social media. Have you ever stopped to realize how large of a hold Instagram or Facebook has on you? We spend all, or most, of our time looking at the lives of others instead of living our own. Sometimes even living vicariously through their posts. Personally it helps me fall asleep at times, and it’s the first thing I check in the mornings to help me wake up. What substance does it really have, how does it benefit us? It really doesn’t. We use it to judge others, and let’s face it, stalk people from time to time. Yes stalk….because looking at every post of one particular person to judge who they are, or what they might be in to is stalking. Our heads are so buried in our devices that we see and take pictures of our experiences, but do we really stop to experience the moment? Do we really soak in all that surrounds us in that fleeting moment significant enough to post about? It is said by many a psychologist that social media creates narcissists. Posting something about yourself or your interests is like having your own 15 minutes of fame, and it’s addictive. We’ve all seen the crazy pictures parents force the children to take, instilling an ever further root of narcissism and dependance on social platforms for interaction. Granted I’m not against it. There are some amazing benefits to having a FB or Instagram account. However, if you stop and think……how much of your mind is invested in it?
Discomfort vs Greatness
Many people say that being uncomfortable is a sign that you are at the edge of greatness. Well for the past year I have been making uncomfortable decisions. I’ve felt every color of emotion with my discomfort all for the hope of that spark of greatness. Now looking back at my year, I will say it has been an eventful one, and I have come a long way. I had a dream career that I was focused on, and I am now in the doorway of my success. Some more discomfort and new experiences and I should be there. So discomforts seems to have been my road to greatness in my career. Now, does this ring true for the personal as well? That I have yet to find out. I have put myself in yet another uncomfortable situation with the hope that this will lead to greatness but this time in my personal life. Challenging yourself is a necessary part of personal growth. Without it, you wouldn’t learn about yourself. For myself it’s the discomfort of letting go that I struggle with. Control is great for a successful career, but for everything else it doesn’t work. So my challenge for discomfort is the action of letting go. What makes you uncomfortable? And if you put yourself in that situation, what greatness might evolve from it? That is my challenge to you.
Thinking
It’s been a while since I wrote here. I’ve had many adventures since my last posts, good ones, and bad ones. But most of all I’ve been trying to figure out that all illusive “meaning of life”. Life…..we all thought it was easy peasy. As kids you grow up with this I can conquer anything attitude. When does it slip away? Was it when you realized you had to pay for that nice watch by yourself…but wait!…you also have to pay rent, and feed yourself! Choices…. They seem so trivial now. That dilemma has a clear solution. The true art of life is finding the balance between working, hobbies, cool watches, housing, feeding yourself, and taking proper care of your body. Even now…..still not in the right order….and missing some things. Where is the fun?
Looking at my parents seemingly having things somewhat together I wonder; “How long did it take you to get your stuff together, you have it all figured out”! Little do you realize they don’t. Neither does anyone you think has their “stuff” together, it is all a facade. We are all illusions of what we want to be. Why do we feel like we have to be this mask? This mask gains trust, yes, gives people confidence in investing in your “product” or whatever your selling. In the end we are all sales men, and women, selling the idea of “us” to get something we want. All these thoughts make my head spin, and wish I was just back to being that child, where things were simple and straight forward. I want to explore myself and the world, without the illusions of grandeur, masks, and social groupings imprinted upon us.
Freedom….that is the ultimate goal
What is freedom to you?
Life has a funny way of pointing out exactly what you need. Whether it be good or bad, the universe always has something waiting for you around the corner. Find your enjoyment in the journey

All big things begin with the smallest steps
Everything in life comes with time,
You just have to go for what you believe is right, and never give up.
I can’t guarantee your heart won’t get broken, or you won’t be disappointed,
But at least you can say you tried,
And one day something better will end up at that door.
To ride your life on the waves of the subconscious,
Is to allow everything but yourself to determine the shape of your future.
Delve into the conscious and watch your horizons change,
For life’s measure of importance is only determined by your state of mind.
